About your day in a woodland
What kind of woodland is it ?
  • A field with some trees
  • A heatherclad moor
  • A moorland
  • A park with trees
  • A coniferous forest
  • A deciduous forest (Hardwood forest)
  • A mixed forest

Name of the most common tree?

..................................

Are there many trees around?
  • It's a thick (dense) forest
  • It's an open forest
  • It's just a few trees

How many different kinds of herbs, grasses, ferns etc. (field- vegetation) are there on the ground?

..................................

Look for animals/insects/plants
...in the tree and on the ground - do you recognize them? What are they living on?
Which animals/insects/plants have you found?

..................................

What's the air like in your area?
Lichens can only flourish in a very pure atmosphere, consequently they are never found in polluted areas. Using a very simple key you can get some idea about air quality in your area.

Polluted air- no lichens or very small 'spotted' rusky species (looks like a crust on a wound)
Fairly pure air
- Lichens from A above but also crumpled, 'bushy' lichens.
Pure air - Lichens form A and B above  but also 'bearded' lichens

  • The air seems to be polluted
  • The air seems to be fairly pure
  • The air seems to be pure

Examine the soil
Soil is a mixture of many compounds. If the soil has been modified and acted upon where it's actually found then it probably consists of pulverized minerals from the earth-crust beneath. Furthermore there are more or less organic materials depending on the amount of destruents and the process of decay.

The darker the soil is the more organic material, the lighter the less.
What's the colour of the soil in your area?
